Origin:
Native to central and eastern North America.

Height/Physical Description:
Deciduous tree.  Height is 35 to 70 feet and 25 to 35 feet wide.  Upright trunk with spreading, arching branches.  Bright green, fern-like leaves that are thorny.  Inconspicuous flowers in Summer that
are followed by seed pods in the Fall.

Special Attributes:  
The fern-like leaves cast filtered shade which allows other plants such as grass and others to grow beneath it.  It is tolerant of acid or alkaline soil conditions and is cold, heat and drought tolerant. Attracts bees and other pollinators.

Private nurseries and online.

Planting Requirements:  
The best time to plant trees is early Spring and Fall.

Watering
:  Requires moderate to regular water.  Drip system is best, watering 3 times a week, 3 hours a day for mature trees.

Fertilizing:  
No need to fertilize other than compost.

Harvesting:
 Nothing to harvest, however, seed pods form in the Fall.

Prune broken, dead, and cross branches in the Fall when leaves have dropped.
